Problem Solve.

All projects experience unexpected challenges that require excellent problem solving capability from the project manager.

Beyond simply identifying an issue, project managers must be able to help evaluate options, identify the appropriate solutions, and support implementation of that solution.  Impact to the project bottom line – cost, time, quality – must be considered.  Further, the effect on processes and people also needs to be reviewed as ultimately these drive the efficiency of the project efforts.   A project manager must offer an analytical perspective combined with strong interpersonal skills and be a seasoned business professional with an objective approach to solving problems.

Firms often bring in an outside PM to ensure that the project management role has effective problem solving skills and approaches project challenges in an unbiased, neutral fashion.

Understand that most problems are a good sign. Problems indicate that progress is being made, wheels are turning, you are moving toward your goals. Beware when you have no problems. Then you’ve really got a problem… Problems are like landmarks of progress.”  Scott Alexander
